These graves are quite different from that of prevailing structures of Kerala Muslims. These graves have only one white stone fixed upon them. Kerala muslims have the tradition of fixing two stones on both sides of the grave. Again these white stones bear some arabic inscriptions upon them. The arabic letters on these arabic inscriptions have no dot upon them. The system of writing arabic letters along with dots is believed to start from 60 A.H. i.e, the period of Hajjaj bin Yusuf al-saqafi, the Iraqi governor who sent Ibn Qasim to northern India. It is told that we can trace the names of Hasan and Zaid from these inscriptions. It means either they are some Muslim Arabs who came to Malabar and lived there or they are the Malabari Muslims who were buried according to the Muslim tradition. This disclose the fact that Islam has reached Malabar in the seventh or eighth centuries.haisam hasannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5836405569656986621.post-30530229170172453862014-09-18T10:55:23.532+03:002014-09-18T10:55:23.532+03:00Thanks nabeel bhai.....I remember reading in a Mal...Thanks nabeel bhai.....I remember reading in a Malayalam book ( Mahathaya Mappila Sahitya Parambaryam) that a stone with an inscription which reads San:am Sun Hijra 5 was found in the Qabarstan of Irikkur. A Muslim officer of the Mysore army in his diary (as edited by Ghulam Muhammad Sultan Sahib, the only surviving son of Tipu Sultan) describes it:
“ Nothing was to be seen on the roads for a distance of four leagues, nothing was found but only scattered limbs and mutilated bodies of Hindus. The country of Nairs was thrown into a general consternation which was much increased by the cruelty of the Mappilas who followed the invading cavalry of Hyder Ali Khan and massacred all those who escaped without sparing even women and children; so that the army advancing under the conduct of this enraged multitude Mappilas instead of meeting with continued resistance, found villages, fortresses, temples and every habitable place forsaken and deserted. ”

In the following Mysorean rule of Malabar, Mappilas were favoured against the Hindu landlords of the region and the most notable advantage for the community during this time is the grant of customary rights for the Mappila tenants over their land. However, such measures of the Muslim rulers widened the communal imbalance of Malabar.

^ Robert Elgood (15 November 1995). Firearms of the Islamic World: in the Tared Rajab Museum, Kuwait. So whether or nor a Chera king converted to Islam or any other religion the Kerala Muslim community did get established.

Secondly Tipu's forced conversions , I read from somewhere that forced conversions in India have a tendency to lapse back to original religion who ever the coercer was by religion and whoever the victim was by religion. I dont have proof of this though they cite the examples of Harihara and Bukka the founders of Vijayanagar empire who were forcibly converted and then reverted to Hinduism.

So what it means in effect is Kerala's Muslim community seems to have been founded through trade - trading communities coming across a new religion ? It is said the last Cheraman Peruman had gone to Mecca to learn about Islam and became a Muslim there. And, this last Cheraman became sick while returning to India and died in the port town of Salalah(Oman). This has also been confirmed by the present descendant of Cheraman family Raja Valiathampuram of Kodungallur in an interview. Interestingly I was in Salalah (Oman) for 18 months during my eight years' stay in Sultanate of Oman. The locals and my Malabar friends used to say there was "a kabarastan of Malabari King" in Salalah. Now I feel sorry that I did not care visit the place during that time. Photograph of the tomb is available in a website.

Best wishes,

Brahmanyan.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5836405569656986621.post-84046773995729940642011-07-14T13:57:22.104+03:002011-07-14T13:57:22.104+03:00@ Dr Sabu
The Perumal story shall lie a mystery fo...@ Dr Sabu
The Perumal story shall lie a mystery forever unless any older source pops up from anywhere in the world with a reference to such an incident. I doubt if the Salalah tomb is real. IIRC there's also a 10 metre long qabar there thats supposed to belong to some prophet or so. It just adds up to the long list of unmarked graves being marketed as historic sites for financial gain.

@Sreeja,
I hope to continue the piece in the coming weeks. I'd actually wanted to investigate on the supposedly 7th century tombstones scattered across Malabar and see if they had any truth in them. So far, I haven't found anything reliable to say they are authentic in terms of the ages they are supposed to belong to.

@Kanooraan
Thanks

@Anonymous
You are referring to the Keralolpathi version of events. Palli Bana perumal's conversion to Islam is not corroborated by other established sources. You can always find a lot of books that certify it as a fact based on the same keralolpathi source, but if you have any primary source other than the keralolpathi, pls let me know.
As mentioned above, a name like Tajuddin, most likely would not have belonged to the eighth century. Its probably around the 10th century. Abdurahman Al Samiri is a theory I've seen in Hussein Randathani's books. I doubt his claims because no authentic historian of the Samuthiri kings suggest their existence in the 7th century. Most put their date in the 12th century, after the end of the Chera dynasty. The origins of Calicut itself is dated at some time in the eleventh century.nhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11566577757682981764noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5836405569656986621.post-51522355707651681552011-07-14T13:43:22.909+03:002011-07-14T13:43:22.909+03:00not cheraman perumal, but 'palli bana perumal&...not cheraman perumal, but 'palli bana perumal' converted to islam first.name was tajuddin. cheraman is 2nd king converted 2 islam, named a.rahman al samiri lived in hijra 2nd c. for details call +919746106731.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
